Chemical composition]: mimosine (mimoside), saffron acid (crocetin); pre-tested with flavonoid glycosides, phenols, amino acids, organic acids.
Distribution area]: Distributed in East China, South China, Southwest China. Born in mountain slopes from forests, roadsides, wetlands; cultivated.
Botanical Characteristics]: Perennial herb or half-shrub, up to 1m high, stems multi-branched, scattered barbed hairs or sharp spines throughout the body. 2 pinnately compound leaves, pinnae 2 ~ 4, palmately arranged, leaflets 14 ~ 48, oblong, 6 ~ 11mm long, 1.5 ~ 2mm wide, margins and veins with prickly hairs; petiole 1.5 ~ 4cm long; stipules lanceolate, with prickly hairs. Heads oblong, 2-3 axillary; flowers small, light red; calyx campanulate, with 8 tiny calyx teeth; petals 4, united at base; stamens 4, projecting beyond petals. The pods are flat, with prickly hairs on the edges, and have 3-4 pod nodes with 1 seed per node, which fall off between the nodes at maturity. Flowering from March to October, fruiting from May to November.
Storage: Place in a cool, dry, light, avoiding high temperature.
